Abstract: The bipedal rats model was developed by forelimb amputation and special rearing methodvs.Normal rats served as the control. The ultrastructure of nucleus pulposus of L2-3 discs of these rats were observed under electron microscope. With the increasing of aging and stress, obvious degeneration and necrosis were observed in the notochordal cells in nucleus pulposus of SD rats. In the matrix the arrangement of the collagen fiber became disordered, lamellar structures and mass appeared. These results demonstrated that aging and stress accelerated the degeneration of nucleus pulposus of SD rats. The degeneration proce-dure was in agreement with that of human beings.
