Abstract: The Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rat, one of the the best characterized animal models of spontaneous non-obese T2D, has similar progressive course with human. This animal is characterized by impaired glucose-induced insulin secretion, decreased beta cell mass, raised fasting blood glucose level, hepatic glucose overproduction and moderate insulin resistance in muscles and adipose tissues. Here, we review studies concerning genetic characterization, abnormal islet morphology, cytokines changes in some major tissues, such as islet, liver, muscles and adipose tissues, and the relationship of these changes and T2D etiopathology.
