Shanghai is one of the important medical research bases in China. In order to strengthen the scientific administration for lab animal institutions under the Shanghai Bureau of Health to fully play their roles in medical research and to enhance the control of lab animal, by organizing the specialists in laboratory animal science and the officials concerned, a municipal committee, Shanghai Medical Lab Animal Administration Committee (SMLAAC)，was established in May 1984. Up to the present, the accreditation of animal, animal facilities and the qualification for technicians have already been developed.
