Abstract: "From 1984 to 1990，we were chiefly engaged in the following projects. (1)The upgrading of laboratory animal quality to meet the criteria issued by the Ministry of Public Health. We have successfully accomplished the research projects which include “The Studying and Manufacturing of Plastic Film Isolator” (in 1984),“The Establishment of GF and SPF Mouse Breeding Neuclei Through Bio-cleaning” and “The Establishment of Clean-mouse Production Colonies” (in 1988)，“The Establishment of Clean Guinea-pig Production Colony” (in 1989)，“The Study of Bio-cleaning in Golden Hamster” (in 1990)，“The Establishment of Clean Gerbils Production Colonies” (in 1990), “The Study of Full Nutrient Pellet Diet for Mouse” and “The Study of Full Nutrient Pellet for Golden Hamster” (inl990). All The relevant research papers have been published in《Shanghai Laboratory Animal Science》. (2)The improvement of technology for laboratory animal quality monitoring. we have set up Genetics,Virology, Bacteriology, Pathology, Parasitology and Nutrition laboratories for carrying out routine quality monitoring and research project. We have recently accomplished the research project on “The Study and Preparation of the Diagnostic Kits for the Pathogenic Microbiological Infections in Laboratory Animals”. This is one of the major research projects of the Ministry of Public Health. (3)The establishment of animal models for human diseases. we have accomplished the research project assigned by the State Commission of Science and Technology on“The Animal Model for Human Hepatitis B virus Infection”，and found that Common Marmoset and Moustached Tamarin are both equally susceptible to HAV. The animal model for human urinary bladder cancer was successfully established in the strain of SSB mouse which is inbred by our laboratory. (4)Supplying qualified laboratory animals for other institutions: Besides for our own institute, we also have supplied those institutions in other provinces and cities in China with a considerable amount of qulified animals as breeding neuclei or for animal experiments. (5)Education and training of technicians for other provinces and cities. In the past 5 years, we have received 18 technicians from 15 provinces and cities in China to have their advanced training on care and management of GF and SPF mice，the operation of isolators as well as the techniques of Bio-cleaning and the laboratory animal quality monitoring."
