Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice, deficient for both T and B lymphocytes, had been bred successfully in laminar air flow units. The life spans of most SCID mice were over 12 months, the average litter size 5.5, the reproductive and weaning rate were comparable to those of BALB/c mice. The results of microbiological examination showed that the animals were free from the specific pathogens. It was also revealed that the thymus and spleen were significantly smaller than those of BALB/c mice, circulating lymphocytes comprised only a small fraction of the total leukocytes in the peripheral blood (11%-26%)» while neutrophils amounted to 74%—87%. Three kinds of human tumor tissues (lung carcinoma, liver cell carcinoma and mucinous carcinoma of colon) xenografted in SCID mice grew much more faster than those in BALB/c nude mice.

The lingual superficial structure of dog, cat, rhesus monkey, pig, rabbit, rat and guinea-pig was studied by scanning electronmicroscope. The tongue proper of pigs reveals clearly and its lingual papillae structure on the surface is very similar to that of human being. Therefore, pigs can be selected as an ideal pathological model. The lingual structure of rabbit also resembles that of human being, but the superficial keratosis of the tongue is very apparent and the revelation of the tongue proper is not satisfactory. However, because of its availability and low price, rabbit can also be selected as the model for tongue feature study.

A rapid sensitive ELISA inhibitory test was designed to detect
Pasteurella multocida
infection in laboratory animals. In the reactive system, the soluble material extracted from
P. multocida
(P.m)strain P-1059 X-73 or A-898 was used as coating antigen, rabbits were immunized with these three strains of whole bacteri resapecti-vely. The purified rabbits IgG of anti-P.m was labeled with HRP by sodium periodate method. The HRP labeled rabbit anti-P. m IgG was mixed with animal serum samples to operate ELISA inhibitory test. The conventional indirect ELISA was performed to confirm the results. It was found that infective rate of P.m strain P-1059 in rabbits was as high as 30%; while in mice and hamsters, no positive samples were detected. The results indicated that this is an easy, rapid and reliable method for the detection of P. m infection in laboratory animals.

"The experiments were undertaken to investigate the effects of microinjection of arginine vasopressin (AVP) and arginine vasopressin monoclonal antibody (AVPMcAb) into the medial amygdaloid nucleus (meA) on endotoxin-induced fever in rabbits. The results were as follows:①Injection of AVP into meA markedly suppressed en-dotoxin-induced fever. Injection of AVPMcAb into meA markedly augmented and prolonged fever responses. (2) Injection of AVP or AVPMcAb alone into lateral amygdaloid nucleus did not influence febrile responses. These results provided evidences that AVP might act within the meA to evoke antipyresis. "

The tissue distribution and pharmacokinetics of 125I labeled p-iodophentermine (
125
I-IP) as a brain perfusion imaging agent in SD rats was studied and compared with those of the other two 125I labeled amine brain imaging agents
125
I-IMP (N-isopropyl-4-iodoamphetamine) and
125
I-HIPDM [N, N,N'-trimethy 1-N'-(2-hydraxy-3-methyl-5-iodobenzyl)-l,3-propanediamine]. The results showed that the lipo-philicity of
125
I-IP is increased by substituting, with methyls, which makes the agent easier to pass through the blood-brain barrier.
