    Biological Characteristics of Banna Minipig

    The Banna Minipig originated from the Xishang Banna Prefecture,Yunnan Province, belongs to the stock of Huanan-type pig (Southern China pig). In May 1987, eight male and 42 female native Banna Minipigs were introduced to the prefecture pig breeding farm. During 3 years rearing and selective breeding, more than 150 char-acteristicvs were determined and estimated.The results showed that the body weight, height and length at 6 months old were 13.10±0.40 kg, 32.34±0.36cm and 54.59±0.79cm for males, 17.21±0.42 kg, 34.40±0.24cm and 58.52±0.60 for females. The adult body weight was 36.12±1.09 kg and 43.29±1.04 kg for ma-les and females respectively. The minipig was sexuel precocity, the breeding age starts at 4-6 months old. The survival littersize was 7.84±0.39 for multiparous sow. The heritability of the characteristics related to body size reached to 0.3 or even more, and also shows medium genetic relation between the characteristics. The results suggest that the characteristics of small body size and low growth rate of Banna Minipig can be inherited stably.

    In experimental group of female SD rats at the age of 11-15 months and control group of those at 3-5 months, the serum levels of gonadotropin and sex hormones were detected, smear of vaginal cell, structure of ovary, uterus and adrenal cortex, changes of atrial specific granule (ASG) were observed by microscope and electron microscope. The results showed no regular estrous cycle in experimental rats, the levels of serum estradiol (E2) reduced and LH elevated significantly, FSH rose slightly, there is reduction in the number of the primordial, primary and secondary oogoniums with increase in degenerated oogoniums. The histological changes in the ovary and endometrium were not matched with each other,the myocardium showes the tendency of senile changes. The results suggest that the female SD ras at the age of 11-15 months enter their natural climacteric and perhaps it can be adopted as the animal model for human climacterie study.

    After using more than clinical operative voltage and impact frequency of shockwave,the ultrastructure of the main internal organs was observed by electron microscope and the serum biochemistry was detected in dogs.The results indicated that no obvious changes were found in ultrastructure, function of the main internal organs and serum biochemistry.

    Super ovulation in inbred mice can provide a lot of embryos for the establishment of mouse embryo cryobank.Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin and human chorionic gonadotropin were used for the superovulation in BALB/c and C 57 BL/6 A mice, satisfactory results were obtained by the addition of more than 1 μg of 15-methyl prostaglandin F according to the characteristics of the mouse strains. The results show that the average usable embryos obtained from one superovulated BALB/c and C57BL/6 A mouse are 22 and 23 respectively, but only 7 and 8 in control animals. The pregnancy rate is higher in the treated mice than the controls.

    To establish an effective method for identifying the vitality of mouse embryos, the embryos were stained with trypan blue in different concentrations diluted by PBS (1:6, 1:4,1:3, 1:2,1:1,1:0) and cultured separately for each group. The results revealed that the developing rates were 70.7%,66.5%,77.0%,60.0%,45.0% and 30.0% respectively. The results suggest that the 1:3 staining concentration is optimal. It was further confirmed by the electron microscopy.

    The location and activities of the ATPase and G-6-Pase in lymphocytes of the lymph nodes in rhesus monkey were studied using electron enzyme histochemical methods. The results showed the reaction granules of ATPase can be seen clearly on the sites just below the cell membrane.The reaction granules of G-6-Pase can be observed on the surface of endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. The results suggest that ATPase and G-6-Pase in the lymphocytes of the lymph nodes in rhesus monkey can be marked accurately. The location and activity of the enzymes are similar to that in human.

    To study the effects of chronic alcohol intake on γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT)activity in rat liver. Male and female Sprague Dawley rats were fed with 20% ethanol at the dose of 790 mg/kg body weight per day for 3 months. The γ-GT activity was measured at 1,2,and 3 month of experiment. No significant differences were found in γ-GT activity between experimental and control rats, however γ-GT activity was inhibited by ethanol in vitro.
