The microbiological quality control on laboratory animals was studied. The results showed that acetic peroxide,Xiao Du Lin,Jin An,glutaraldehyde,Xing Jie -er -mie and Bai Du Sa were effective germicidal agents. Acetic peroxide and glutaraldehyde was suitable for the sterilizing of barrier animal rooms before using, while Xiao Du Lin and Xing Jie - er - mie was suitable for maintaining the aseptic environment of barrier animal rooms. By adding in Jin An the drinking water could prevent and control the infection of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The drinking water acidified with HC1 had similar effect.

The Reconstruction program for the ventilation system in laboratory animal rooms was reported. The indoor inlet and outlet were installed with medium - efficacy filter and rough filter respectively. The fresh air was supplied by the original ventilation system. The indoor fresh air mixed with the circulating air was cooled or heated by the window air condition machines, and then pumped through tubular filter into the animal room. The reconstructed animal rooms reached the requirements of clean semi - barrier system with low cost and energy consuming.

The laboratory animals were challenged with trophozoites of G. lamblia from axenic culture and trophozoites of G, simoni from naturally infected golden hamsters by oral and duodenal routes. The results showed that all the animals (9 rats,9 guinea pigs and 4 rabbits) challenged with cultured trophozoites of G. lamblia were not infected, and that when challenged with G. simoni the rats (n=10) were infected, while the guinea pigs ( n=8) and rabbits (n=2) were not. It indicated that there was a biological difference between G. lamblia and G. simoni although they were morphologically identical. It was also observed that young rats were more susceptible than adult rats to G. simoni. The cysts of G. simoni were detected in rat faeces. It indicated that G. simoni could complete its life cycle in rats.

Twelve female New Zealand white rabbits of 7 months old were subjected to oophorectomy. Before the oophorectomy the activities of serum alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase and bone - specific alkaline phosphatase were 20.06±8.20,19.06±5.46 and 14.04±1.67U/L respectively and declined significantly to 14.60±4.64,11.04±4.10 and 4.44±2.10 U/L respectively 8 months after oophorectomy(P<0.001). Since the decline in bone -specific alkaline phosphatase activity far exceeded that in the alkaline phosphatase activity, the former could be used as a sensitive special index for bone metabolism. The decline in bone - specific alkaline phosphatase also exceeded that in the acid phosphatase activity. The results suggest that the activities of these enzymes can be considered as a part of the biochemical parameters for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

A Modified method for parapharyngeal hypophysectomy in rats was described in detail. It covered the improvement in the method of anesthesia, surgical instruments and postoperation care. The results showed that it shortened the operation time and reduced the mortality after the operation.
