Abstract: With the development of laboratory animal science in biomedical research, more and more people pay attention to the care and use of laboratory animals, especially animal welfare. There are several components in an effective animal care and use program，among which, adequate veterinary care is considered internationally to be one of the most essential components. Many countries and non-governmental organizations have promulgated guidelines for adequate veterinary medical care for laboratory animals. The objective of this article is to introduce western notions of veterinary care to Chinese audiences，to identify the gaps between China and other countries on this aspect and to recommend the possible resolutions.
