The Development of Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center Academia Scinica for Ten Years

"Located in Shanghai，the biggest city of China, Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center of Academia Sinica (SLACAS) is one of the largest laboratory animal breeder, supplier as well as monitoring agency in China. Half output of the qualified laboratory animals is provided for the institutes of Academia Sinica and the rest is supplied to the universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical factories and institutes all over the China. SLACAS has been developing dramatically since 1981. It is able to supply all kinds of laboratory animals annually——70000 mice，30000 rats，2000 BALB/c nude mice，3000 rabbits，100 dogs and 100 purposed-bred monkeys or even more. The full barrier facility with 2000M2 rooms has been producing top qualified SPF mice and rats. The purposed-bred monkeys have been exported to U. S.A®，U.K»， Japan, France, Germany and others and praised by clients.SLACAS lias established and improved the quality control techniques for all kinds of laboratory animals。 It still puts large amount of money into research division developing new techniques for laboratory animal quality each year. It has formed comprehensive capability of quality control with virology，bacteriology, parasitology, genetics, nutrition, and housing for laboratory animals® Thus? SLACAS guarantees the animal quality with monitoring result on request. 7 staffs have visited U.S. A.，U. K.， and Japan for study tour and brought back advanced techniques. 3 staffs attended international symposium on laboratory animal science held in U.S.A. and Japan. SLACAS has invited 99 experienced experts and friends from U.S.A.，Japan，Germany, Canada, Cuba, Sweden, New Zealand and Singapore not only exchanged points of view and learned from each other but also cooperated with some of them such as Sino-Japan cooperation on developing wild animal into laboratory animal. 《Shanghai Laborory Animal Science》 is the field of learning and exchanging new experience and publishing research achievement. Mr. Qian and Mr. Cao joined other ezperts in setting it up as members of Board. It has been becoming an important place to exchang new experience, publish research approaches on laboratory animal science for 10 years. With the substantial contents, readable wordsand reasonable setting type, it is welcome more and more Just as its tenth aniversary, it is congratulated on its making great progress and contributions to China's laboratory animal science in the period of crossing century."

A Brief Review of Our Achievements in 1984～1990

"From 1984 to 1990，we were chiefly engaged in the following projects. (1)The upgrading of laboratory animal quality to meet the criteria issued by the Ministry of Public Health. We have successfully accomplished the research projects which include “The Studying and Manufacturing of Plastic Film Isolator” (in 1984),“The Establishment of GF and SPF Mouse Breeding Neuclei Through Bio-cleaning” and “The Establishment of Clean-mouse Production Colonies” (in 1988)，“The Establishment of Clean Guinea-pig Production Colony” (in 1989)，“The Study of Bio-cleaning in Golden Hamster” (in 1990)，“The Establishment of Clean Gerbils Production Colonies” (in 1990), “The Study of Full Nutrient Pellet Diet for Mouse” and “The Study of Full Nutrient Pellet for Golden Hamster” (inl990). All The relevant research papers have been published in《Shanghai Laboratory Animal Science》. (2)The improvement of technology for laboratory animal quality monitoring. we have set up Genetics,Virology, Bacteriology, Pathology, Parasitology and Nutrition laboratories for carrying out routine quality monitoring and research project. We have recently accomplished the research project on “The Study and Preparation of the Diagnostic Kits for the Pathogenic Microbiological Infections in Laboratory Animals”. This is one of the major research projects of the Ministry of Public Health. (3)The establishment of animal models for human diseases. we have accomplished the research project assigned by the State Commission of Science and Technology on“The Animal Model for Human Hepatitis B virus Infection”，and found that Common Marmoset and Moustached Tamarin are both equally susceptible to HAV. The animal model for human urinary bladder cancer was successfully established in the strain of SSB mouse which is inbred by our laboratory. (4)Supplying qualified laboratory animals for other institutions: Besides for our own institute, we also have supplied those institutions in other provinces and cities in China with a considerable amount of qulified animals as breeding neuclei or for animal experiments. (5)Education and training of technicians for other provinces and cities. In the past 5 years, we have received 18 technicians from 15 provinces and cities in China to have their advanced training on care and management of GF and SPF mice，the operation of isolators as well as the techniques of Bio-cleaning and the laboratory animal quality monitoring."

This paper described the relationship between laboratory animal science and pharmaceutical industry. A varity of strains of laboratory animal have been used in research and development of new drugs, preclinical pharmcology and toxicity, and bioassay of some products. Therefore the standardized laboratory animals are essential for pharmaceutical industry.

Shanghai is one of the important medical research bases in China. In order to strengthen the scientific administration for lab animal institutions under the Shanghai Bureau of Health to fully play their roles in medical research and to enhance the control of lab animal, by organizing the specialists in laboratory animal science and the officials concerned, a municipal committee, Shanghai Medical Lab Animal Administration Committee (SMLAAC)，was established in May 1984. Up to the present, the accreditation of animal, animal facilities and the qualification for technicians have already been developed. It is obvious that SMLAAC has achieved a considerable success in the past seven years and many relevant reports have been appeared in《SLAS》.（cf.《SLAS》，4:171，1984； 5:50 and 205，1985； 6:245, 1986； 7:169， 1987： and 9:211， 1989

"As a witness to the achievement of the reform and the open policy, at the end of the special, we'd like to give you a• peice of information on Shanghai SIPPR/BK Laboratory Animal Ltd, It was founded in August 1990，and is a joint venture company established between the Shanghai institute of planned parenthood research (SIPPR.) and Eantin and Kingman Universal Ltd (BK).
